The Electric Capstan and What It Can Do for You

Winches are machines that enable easy pulling, usually heavy loads. A winch consists of several parts, including a rope or chain, a rotating cylindrical part where the rope is secured, and a rotating mechanism. The rotating mechanism is mostly an electric motor or a crank.

Types of Winches

Due to advancements in control and electrical technology, it is possible to achieve high pulling speeds and power. Generally, winches can be powered in three ways; manually, electrically ( using a motor), and through hydraulics. The rotating mechanism is connected to the crankshaft, which pulls the ropes.

Components of The Electric Capstan Winch

Capstan winches pull loads horizontally. This implies that their winch drum is oriented in a vertical position. A portion is extended to provide room for the rope to be rolled on. The drum is placed such that the ropes can be released at the angle required. To get optimum force from the winch, the dual head has relatively sized channels etched on it. A firm axle is required for the machine to withstand the forces. The warping head has a transmission gear that is connected to the electric motor, the primary source of the torque used to pull.

Operation of The Electric Capstan

The electric capstan, as the name suggests, is powered by electricity. A motor is involved in the design. It is mainly used for anchoring ships and mooring. The capacity of the load is, however, limited and cannot be used for heavy load marine winch. The electric capstan has a simple design, which makes it easier to operate. Most designers will concur that simplicity in design also yields a safe-to-use product. This makes an electric capstan a safer machine to use.

Features of a Typical Electric Capstan

A good electric capstan should have a maximum load close to 35 tones. The capacity of the rope on the winch depends on user preference. The diameter of the ropes used for the electric capstan should range from eleven to sixty millimeters and of the right material to withstand the forces involved during its operation. Warping speed for an electric capstan is between twelve to eighteen meters per minute in most cases but also depends on the load.

Installation and Safety

For proper function, up to standard installation is implemented. For safety reasons, a braking device is added so that when power is not delivered, it can act as a control measure. According to standards in engineering, the braking system should bear at least 1.5 times the load. Control is what ensures that the device runs correctly. Some electric capstans are bi-directional for the convenience of the user, an added feature being an emergency stop for safety. To control warping speeds, the motors are controlled by a frequency inverter.

Where is an Electric Capstan Applicable?

Electric capstan winches are versatile and are easier to use for any personnel. They have an impressively small size and therefore occupy less space. The electric capstan has several applications, the stand out being that of mooring and anchoring of ships, and can also be used when a car has stalled. What’s more, a small-sized electric capstan can be used to pull cables through conduits.
